Globalization, in its most recent wave, has brought about new phenomena in the fields of communication, economics, technology, culture, society, politics, and other areas through the erosion of temporal and spatial boundaries—phenomena that had not previously existed. In this respect, globalization has constituted an opportunity in one sphere while simultaneously posing a threat in another; it has strengthened certain spheres while creating vulnerabilities in others. Consequently, three major responses to globalization emerged: first, support from the majority of cultural universalists; second, opposition from the majority of cultural particularists; and third, an approach that sought, on the one hand, to utilize its opportunities and, on the other hand, to mitigate its threats by offering appropriate solutions. Shiite political jurisprudence in Iran falls within this third category. Globalization created an opportunity for economies and national identities to present and represent themselves on the global stage. At the same time, by providing similar opportunities to subnational groups, it posed a challenge to national identity. The question, therefore, is: What solutions does Shiite political jurisprudence offer to the challenges that globalization has created for Iran’s national identity? To answer this question, the article employs descriptive, analytical, and historical research methods. The aim of the article is to identify these challenges and the corresponding solutions. The findings show that, in confronting the challenges posed to the sources of national identity, Iranian Shiite political jurisprudence has derived solutions from own principles covenants.
