Established in 1989, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an international body responsible for overseeing issues related to money laundering and terrorist financing. Its mandate includes preventing money laundering, the financing of terrorism, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The FATF has formulated 40 recommendations that states seeking membership are required to adopt and implement. To date, more than 200 countries and international organizations have formally committed to adhering to the standards established by the FATF. Iran has remained on the FATF blacklist since 2009 due to its continued failure to enact legislation aimed at combating transnational organized crime and terrorist financing. This study seeks to answer the question of what economic repercussions Iran faces as a result of being placed on the FATF blacklist. The proposed hypothesis is that inclusion on this blacklist results in financial restrictions and economic problems. An analytical approach is used to test the research hypothesis. Findings indicate that inclusion on the FATF blacklist is associated with restrictions on banking transactions, a decline in international prestige, and a subsequent decrease in foreign investment, reduced economic growth, currency fluctuations, and increased inflation.
