Abstract

The present article delves into the underlying motives and techniques employed by Western media in portraying Iran and Russia as adversaries. The study is underpinned by two primary theoretical frameworks, namely the advertising model and critical discourse analysis, which are utilized to scrutinize the language and social context of media texts. The central research question seeks to unravel the reasons behind the demonization of Iran and Russia by Western media. This article is an explanatory study that draws on library sources, and the method of analysis employed is discourse analysis. The findings of this research reveal that demonization is utilized by the West as a propaganda tool due to cultural and political disparities, nuclear concerns, support for terrorism, global threats, and regional competition. The creation of negative and hostile images of these countries serves to exert economic and political pressure while simultaneously presenting a positive and amicable image of Western actions. Western media commonly employ terms such as "regime," "dictatorship," "paramilitary," or "proxy" to describe Iran and Russia, while using positive terms such as "government," "democracy," "army," or "partner" to describe themselves. The language used by Western media reflects the interests, biases, and agenda of media owners.

Highlights

Introduction:

In the current interconnected world, the depicting of certain countries as "Evils" can have far-reaching consequences. This is particularly true when it comes to nations such as Iran and Russia, which have often been the subject of negative portrayals in Western media. While it is important to remain aware of potential threats to global peace and stability, it is equally important to approach these issues with a nuanced understanding of the complex political and social factors at play.

By questioning the narrative presented by media outlets and remaining vigilant against manipulation by vested interests, we can ensure that our perspectives are based on fact rather than fear. It is essential to recognize that the portrayal of a nation as an "Evil" is often a simplistic and one-dimensional view that fails to consider the nuances and complexities of its political and social landscape.

As responsible global citizens, it is our duty to remain informed and to engage in critical thinking when it comes to issues of global importance. By doing so, we can work towards a more peaceful and just world, where all nations are treated with respect and dignity. Ultimately, this approach can lead to a more informed and peaceful global community, where nations work together towards shared goals and aspirations.

Methodology

The focus of this article is to examine the portrayal of certain nations as adversaries in Western media and the political and economic interests driving this narrative. To provide a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon, two theoretical frameworks are utilized: the propaganda model and critical discourse analysis.

The propaganda model emphasizes the influence of economic and political elites on mainstream media in Western democracies. This influence results in the filtering, distortion, and manipulation of news to serve their personal agenda. By controlling the information that is disseminated to the public, these elites are able to shape public opinion and maintain their power and influence.

Critical discourse analysis, on the other hand, examines how language is used to construct and convey meanings, values, beliefs, and ideals in relation to social context. This framework allows us to analyze the ways in which certain nations are portrayed in Western media and the underlying political and economic interests that drive these representations.

By utilizing both frameworks, this article aims to provide a thorough understanding of how certain nations are portrayed as adversaries in Western media and the underlying political and economic interests driving this narrative. It is important to critically examine the information that is presented to us in the media and to question the motives behind it. Only by doing so can we gain a more accurate understanding of the world around us and make informed decisions about our own beliefs and actions

Results and Discussion

The main question that this research seeks to answer is why Western media constructs Iran and Russia as evils and what are the political and economic interests behind this narrative.

The study's findings shed light on the use of demonization as a tool for propaganda by the West in order to exert economic and political pressure on other nations. The language employed by Western media outlets is reflective of their interests and biases, with negative terms such as "regime", "dictatorship", and "proxy" being used to describe Iran and Russia. Conversely, positive terms like "government", "democracy", and "partner" are used to describe themselves.

This trend in language usage is indicative of a larger pattern of demonization, where certain nations are vilified and portrayed as threats to the West's interests. This portrayal is often used to justify economic sanctions, military interventions, and other forms of pressure that are detrimental to the targeted nations.

Furthermore, the study highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of international relations and the role of language in shaping public opinion. By recognizing the biases inherent in Western media coverage, it becomes possible to challenge the demonization of certain nations and work towards a more equitable and just global community.

The findings of this study underscore the importance of critical analysis when it comes to media coverage of international events. By recognizing the role of propaganda in shaping public opinion, we can work towards a more informed and just society that is better equipped to navigate complex global issues.

The implications of the study at hand are of great significance, as they highlight the pivotal role of critical analysis in unveiling obscured agendas and prejudices within media texts. Through acknowledging the impact of language in shaping social reality, individuals can effectively scrutinize media messages and detect underlying biases and interests. It is crucial to approach media consumption with a discerning eye and proactively seek out diverse sources of information to gain a more comprehensive understanding of global events. This study underscores the pressing need for media literacy and critical thinking skills to navigate the vast landscape of information available today. Ultimately, the ability to critically analyze media texts is indispensable for individuals to make well-informed decisions and participate in constructive dialogue on critical issues affecting society.

It is imperative for the mainstream media to uphold journalistic integrity and strive towards unbiased reporting. The adoption of constructive journalism and the use of appropriate language and news space can ensure the delivery of accurate and impartial news to the audience. The media plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and influencing political decisions, making it crucial for them to maintain ethical standards and provide an objective perspective of events.
